More than just a party

The people from Dachsenhausen are raising money for a new well

What brings an entire community together on a summer’s day to set up a bouncy castle, grill sausages, and collect donations? In Dachsenhausen, Rhineland-Palatinate, the answer this year was once again the “Brunnenfest” (well party).

This was the second time Gabi Ansel had organized this festival in her local community. Community spirit was an important part of the event—but it wasn’t her only motivation: Gabi Ansel wants to provide clean water to people who currently have no access to it. “I work as a nurse. And I know that when you drink dirty water, it contains bacteria and all sorts of other things.” So she launched this community project.

Gabi’s enthusiasm was contagious: the mayor was immediately impressed and made the community center available to her free of charge—a building that is regularly used for events. “Whenever there is a social event, the community is there to support it,” confirmed Deputy Mayor Sylvia Schmidt. But that was just the beginning. A bakery from the neighboring village donated bread rolls, a food truck was provided free of charge, and numerous cake and goods donations were collected. In addition to Dachsenhausen, four other communities participated in the event.

A team from CBN made sure to attend the celebration themselves, which Gabi Ansel particularly appreciated. “It makes you feel supported. I find this collaboration with CBN very, very valuable.”

In addition to homemade baked goods and snacks, visitors could enjoy refreshments or browse the private flea market. A bouncy castle, pottery, and face painting made children’s eyes light up. Gabi Ansel counted around 150 to 200 guests throughout the day. “We’d love to come back!” was heard from many voices at the end of the successful celebration.

The campaign raised €4,000. A couple who wishes to remain anonymous decided to donate the remaining €3,000 needed to build a well. Dachsenhausen is now building its second well, demonstrating what can be achieved through solidarity and charity.
