From the struggle for survival to hope
A food truck for Pamela
Pamela Adhiambo is the mother of five children. She lives in the Nairobi area of Kenya. She has been looking after her children alone for six years.
Pamela had to rely on odd jobs. “Life was really hard,” she says, ”I had to get up early to sit somewhere and wait with other women for a job. If I was lucky, I could do the laundry for someone.”
But Pamela often returned home empty-handed after a whole day of job hunting. “I could no longer pay for school. And sometimes my children and I went to bed hungry.” She had to leave two children in the care of her sister. The torn family of four lived in a makeshift tent camp that flooded when it rained. It was cold and uncomfortable. She often prayed to God and hoped for a better future.
Pamela’s eldest daughter plays soccer and told her coach about the situation. He knew Operation Blessing and got in touch. The CBN aid organization then provided Pamela with a food truck with sausages and eggs for frying. This enabled her to set up a small business. She finally had a stable source of income and was able to provide for her family.
She soon expanded her range and started selling filled dumplings. “Now I can earn money and even save a little. I can pay the school fees for my children.” After a short time, she earned enough to even rent a house.
Pamela now cooks for her family every day, and no one has to go to bed hungry. “I want to use my savings to expand my business with more food trucks and create jobs.”
Pamela is delighted with her improved quality of life and new prospects for the future.
