Rescue After the Storm
A new house for Mickella
When Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, struck Jamaica in October 2025, it destroyed Mickella’s home and took everything from her and her family.
“I walked around and gathered up everything that hadn’t been destroyed. I looked for things that might be able to be washed and reused.”
They spent a week in a tent next to their destroyed home until a neighbor finally offered them a room where they could stay for a while.
“There are five of us in our family. I had never lived with everyone in a single room before. So our living conditions were completely different from what we were used to,” Mickella explains.
Help in challenging times
Even after her husband went back to work to support the family, they still had no clear prospect of a new home. Mickella longed for normalcy. “I really wanted things to go back to the way they were before.”
Despite the challenging situation, Mickella decided to help others together with her church congregation. She began volunteering with the CBN charity Operation Blessing to support families in need.
“You could see the joy on people’s faces when you gave them small gifts. The gratitude they showed us was so heartwarming. It gave me a sense of purpose to give, even when I had nothing myself.”
A New Home for Mickella
When Operation Blessing began building homes, it was clear that Mickella needed help too. And so she, too, received a new home.
Mickella was overwhelmed: “It was such a blessing to have a new roof over our heads!”
Before the hurricane, Mickella had been baking cakes and earning some extra money by selling them. So she could do that again, CBN gave her new kitchen equipment: an oven, a mixer, and other utensils she needed for baking.
“On behalf of my family, I would like to sincerely thank Operation Blessing and the entire team for coming here to help us. You have given us new hope, joy, and peace!”
