No more carrying water

How a well makes life easier for two friends

NIGERIA – The small community of Tse Yebe lies amid the fertile farmland of Benue State. The Tiv people who live here are predominantly Christian and self-sufficient farmers who make their living from growing cassava, yams, and oranges. Although the land is fertile and the villagers are hardworking, there is one problem they have been struggling with for a long time: a dramatic shortage of clean water.

Two young women, Peace and Ruth, became friends while fetching water together from the nearby river—a risky, half-hour journey they made every day. They knew the water was not clean, but they had no choice but to use it.

The river was contaminated with disease-causing germs, causing the population to suffer repeatedly from stomach pains and typhoid fever. The overgrown footpath to the river was also dangerous, as it was teeming with snakes, especially during the rainy season. Carrying water home was exhausting, and the journey frightened Peace and Ruth. Then Operation Blessing heard about the villagers’ plight and decided to donate a well to the community.

Because of the need, the CBN relief organization, Operation Blessing, ended up drilling not just one but two wells for Tse Yebe. Now fresh, clean water flows for the villagers, and they no longer have to travel long distances.  Peace was overwhelmed: “I am overjoyed! We no longer must walk the long way and climb the steep hill from the stream.” Ruth added, “God bless Operation Blessing for this wonderful gift to our village. We will be forever grateful to you.”

For the village with over 100 inhabitants, this gift of clean water has changed daily life. Children can now go to school because they no longer must fetch water. In addition, the population is less prone to illness. Thanks to people like you, we can alleviate the shortage of clean drinking water in many parts of the world—and in doing so, tell them about the living water that Jesus Christ offers.
