Safe home – New life

Help for families in Kenya

According to global development figures from the World Bank, 46.9% of people in Kenya live in “extreme poverty,” meaning they have to survive on less than $2.15 per day. As a result, many families in Kenya live in makeshift huts made of corrugated iron or mud. However, these offer little protection from rain, extreme weather conditions, theft, or wild animals.

A home for safety and dignity

The CBN relief organization Operation Blessing therefore has made it its mission to alleviate the hardship of disadvantaged families by building houses. The simple stone houses—you can see one in the video—each have two bedrooms, a living room, a separate kitchen, and a separate latrine with a bathroom. If it’s suitable for the region, they also have a rainwater treatment system.

A house for Manag’oi’s family

Manag’oi Simel and her four children lived in a dwelling she had built herself out of cow dung and grass. She had formed the walls with dry dung and a meager roof of straw. Manag’oi says that the small hut offered them little protection: “The walls were not stable and we were not safe.” The five of them lived in one room, where they slept and cooked. Thanks to donors like you, a solid house could be built for Manag’oi’s family. “I am most happy about the beds and the solar light. The house is well lit and we have enough space.”

Manag’oi can now prepare meals for her family in a separate kitchen, which means there is no more smoke in the living area. This reduces the risk of respiratory diseases and other infections. The separate latrine and rainwater treatment system improve hygiene, which further enhances the family’s health and quality of life.

Manag’oi is delighted with her new home: “Thank you very much! I always pray that God will bless the donors and grant them new prosperity.”
