Clean water for Hiligeo Mazingo
Bring hope to a village in Indonesia
Situated in the mountains on the island of Nias in Indonesia, Hiligeo Mazingo is an agricultural community. Due to its remoteness, the villagers have no access to clean water.
Many people in the community depend on rainwater, which they collect in small, water holes they dug by hand. Yuniati and her eight children are no exception. Although it is possible to buy bottled water, it is often not affordable for large families like hers.
“Every morning, I have to get up before sunrise and walk for miles looking for clean water. My children are often late for school because we have to wait until we find water. Sometimes I feel hopeless, but I know that I have to keep fighting for their health,” says Yuniati.
The rainwater they collect is easily contaminated by bacteria, animal waste and chemicals from agricultural fields. It is not enough to boil the water before drinking it. It regularly leads to stomach pains, diarrhea and skin rashes.
Nine-year-old villager Apriani says: “I often have stomach aches because the water we drink is not clean. I want to be healthy and play like other children without worrying about the water I drink.”
Operation Blessing builds a water system
Thanks to your generous donation to the CBN relief organization Operation Blessing, the people of Hiligeo Mazingo will receive 35 rainwater harvesting systems for 34 households and a church. A water system for one household includes:
-
- gutters and pipes
- a 2000-liter water storage tank
- a faucet
- proper filters and a chlorine dosing system
- a system for cleaning the water in the pipes and in the storage tank
For the church’s new water system, an existing gutter system is connected to a larger water tank. It also includes a filter, a chlorine dosing system and a faucet.
Your support not only provides the community with a solution to their water problem, but Operation Blessing employees also show them how to maintain and preserve the water system. In addition, the whole village receives hygiene training, which shows them the importance of healthy hygiene.
Help change the lives of many people and give them the gift of clean water!
