Hatching Hope for the Future
Your support helps to end generational poverty in Guatemala
Ofelia and her husband were at a crossroads: household expenses continued to rise, while her husband’s daily wage as a field worker barely covered the bare necessities for their two children. Ofelia had taken up weaving to earn some extra money, but the sales were barely profitable. The parents had struggled to survive for a long time, but now they could hardly see a way out. Ofelia’s husband thought about leaving his family and home to look for work opportunities outside their country.
The thought of saying goodbye to his wife and children broke his heart, but his income could not provide a sustainable future for his family. The best way to provide for his wife and children seemed to be to leave them behind.
Stories like these are woven into the fabric of Guatemalan society. They are stories of families torn apart by economic hardship and of parents who are forced to make these decisions. Their aim is to strive for a better life for their children, even if this means that they cannot participate in it themselves.
Ofelia asked God for help. Then the CBN aid organization Operation Blessing heard about the family’s situation. Ofelia was provided with cages full of clucking chickens and sacks of chicken feed. She was also trained on how to profitably provide for her family with her newly established poultry farm.
This enables Ofelia to provide for her family herself and escape the poverty that has often persisted for generations. This makes life much easier for her and her husband and they can give their children a future.
“I collect around 170 to 175 eggs a day,” Ofelia reports, ”and with the sales I can buy fruit, juices and food for my children.” And her business continues to grow. “I am grateful to God, Operation Blessing and the donors for giving me the opportunity to have a business. It has been a great help.”
Your generosity helps strengthen families. They can stay united and work for a better future for their children.
