When\u00a0heaven\u00a0seems\u00a0closed<\/h1>\n


\nSeven\u00a0reasons\u00a0why\u00a0we\u00a0don’t\u00a0hear\u00a0God’s\u00a0voice\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Bible is full of passages that confirm that God speaks and that we, as His children, can hear Him. God has spoken to people through burning bushes (Exodus 3), stubborn donkeys (Numbers 22:28), and angels (Luke 1:28)\u2014and He continues to do so today in many ways. Jesus Himself confirms: \u201cMy sheep hear my voice\u201d (John 10:27a; NIV).<\/p>\n

But why is it sometimes so difficult for us to hear God’s voice?<\/strong> Why are there times when we pray, crave guidance and answers, and yet heaven seems closed?\u00a0Let’s\u00a0look at\u00a0seven\u00a0possible reasons\u00a0why we may not be hearing God right now and what we can do about it:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The environment is too noisy.<\/strong> The world around us today is very noisy. We are bombarded with so many voices that it can sometimes be difficult for us to find peace and encounter God. Therefore: Reduce the noise! Retreat and seek silence in order to encounter God.<\/li>\n
  2. The expectations are different.<\/strong> Perhaps you have a precise idea of how God speaks. The story of Elijah (cf. 1 Kings 19:9-12) makes it clear: God is often not found in the storm, but in the quiet whisper. Just as a lover does not shout in our ear, God’s voice is also quiet when he is close to us and speaks to our hearts.<\/li>\n
  3. God’s (time) plan is different.<\/strong> Sometimes God has other plans\u2014or a different timing. That’s why you sometimes must be patient until God’s answer is audible to you.<\/li>\n
  4. There is something between God and you.<\/strong> Is there an area in your life where you are rebelling against God? Confess your sin and ask God for forgiveness. Removing spiritual distractions can help you tune your ears to hear.<\/li>\n
  5. You have already received your answer.<\/strong> God may have already spoken on the matter. Was the answer different than you wanted? Be obedient to what you have already heard, even if it challenges you. Trust that God means well with you and that He knows what is best for you. Ask God what He meant by it or why it is good.<\/li>\n
  6. Your Bible is closed.<\/strong> There is a saying: \u201cDon’t say God is silent when your Bible is closed.\u201d If we don’t spend time in His Word, it becomes difficult to hear His voice. The better you know Him and the more time you spend with Him, the better you will be able to hear Him speak.<\/li>\n
  7. God wants you to grow.<\/strong> The more mature you become as a Christian, the more God trusts you to make good and wise decisions. He doesn’t always give us a clear yes or no because we and our thinking are renewed through our relationship with him. Perhaps God will also ask you a counter-question that will help you by reflecting on your actions before him.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Times of drought are difficult for us, but they also present an opportunity for growth. <\/strong>Times of doubt and searching can drive us closer into the arms of our heavenly Father. Even if you cannot hear God right now, He is there. His Word clearly promises this\u2014and He never changes. Trust Him to guide you through His Word and His Spirit. Keep at it! Read the Bible, pray, and continue to trust, and you will emerge from these times spiritually enriched.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
