Hearing\u00a0God’s\u00a0Voice<\/h1>\n

How\u00a0to\u00a0hear\u00a0God\u00a0better\u00a0in\u00a0everyday\u00a0life<\/h2>\n

Most people know and believe that God speaks\u2014through the Bible, through a pastor, and sometimes even directly to us. We have all experienced God. But in the\u00a0Bible,\u00a0we also read how Abraham negotiated with God, how God spoke face to face with Moses, and how David received fascinating battle strategies when he asked for them. Well,\u00a0that’s\u00a0not what we first learned when we reached out for more of Jesus. Perceiving His direct speech was more a matter of chance.<\/p>\n

Our journey to follow His voice began in 2007 when we sold our house after Andreas had been suffering from burnout for two years. In our search for more of God, we ended up at Restoring the Foundations, a ministry for emotional and spiritual release. Already during our restoration, and then in training, we experienced and learned to hear Jesus not just for a few words a month, but whenever we turn to him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How\u00a0does\u00a0God\u00a0speak?<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

God speaks through spontaneous thoughts, inner knowledge, images, or memories. <\/strong>He\u00a0always\u00a0uses\u00a0this\u00a0channel,\u00a0whether\u00a0He\u00a0speaks\u00a0through\u00a0the\u00a0Bible,\u00a0other\u00a0people,\u00a0nature,\u00a0or\u00a0directly\u00a0to\u00a0us.\u00a0It\u00a0often\u00a0begins\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0gentle\u00a0impulse\u00a0that\u00a0we\u00a0give\u00a0in\u00a0to.\u00a0It\u00a0is\u00a0important\u00a0that\u00a0it\u00a0comes\u00a0spontaneously\u00a0and\u00a0that\u00a0our\u00a0focus\u00a0is\u00a0on Jesus\u00a0rather\u00a0than\u00a0on\u00a0problems\u00a0or\u00a0our\u00a0own\u00a0ideas.<\/p>\n

Let’s\u00a0briefly examine your imagination\u2014where thoughts, memories, but also God and, unfortunately, other spiritual influences are at work.<\/p>\n

Imagine a banana. Mine is hanging alone in front of me in the air; yours may still be on the tree or already half eaten. As simple as the example is, it shows that God speaks to everyone a little differently. He uses individual imagery because he is not an encyclopedia, but a person with feelings who created us in his image (Genesis 1:27).<\/p>\n

You can expand the imagination. Imagine someone you like calling your name. How you hold the handlebars of your bike. How your favorite food smells and tastes. Finally, imagine your favorite place. Immerse yourself in it. What is where, what is the atmosphere like?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Encountering Jesus …<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now for the next step: we invite Jesus in and see how he\u00a0encounters\u00a0us\u00a0and\u00a0what he says to\u00a0us,\u00a0and\u00a0we want to\u00a0enter into\u00a0dialogue with him.<\/strong> \u201cBut won’t I then form an image of him?\u201d\u00a0Apparently, Jesus\u00a0himself was not afraid of this \u2013 neither in John’s Revelation nor in the dreams of many people. Most people cannot describe his face afterwards, only how they felt, his clothing, or his actions. We and many hundreds of people we have\u00a0accompanied\u00a0have experienced how such encounters give freedom and lead to a deeper relationship\u2014with Jesus, with the Father, or with the Holy Spirit. Our God wants to be so close to us that he even compares himself to a hen gathering her chicks (Matthew 23:37). He gives us the image of a father running toward his\u00a0wayward\u00a0son and kissing him (Luke 15:20) because he wants us to experience him in the same way.\u00a0Above all, it\u00a0is an invitation for our hearts to experience the same thing, because our minds are so limited. \u201cWhat good is it for me to know\u00a0everything but\u00a0not have love …\u201d (1 Corinthians 13:2). Love must be experienced through his actions before we ourselves can fulfill the most important commandment in his sense. It\u00a0remains\u00a0important that we do not control or tell Jesus what to do, but rather hand over the leadership to Jesus and respond to his next impulses.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Is\u00a0it\u00a0from\u00a0God?<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

How do\u00a0we\u00a0distinguish\u00a0God’s\u00a0words?<\/strong> Jesus respects your boundaries. He never contradicts the Bible and always remains true to his character. While the enemy pushes, confuses, or condemns, God exhorts, comforts, and builds you up<\/strong> (1 Corinthians 14:3). He brings truth and clarity (John 16:13). God’s words feel good and uplifting\u2014even when He corrects us. That’s why we test them: Does it fit with His Word, His nature, and His peace?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How do\u00a0we\u00a0get\u00a0closer\u00a0to\u00a0God?<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

One\u00a0thing\u00a0we\u00a0know\u00a0for\u00a0sure:\u00a0Everyone\u00a0can\u00a0learn\u00a0to\u00a0perceive\u00a0God’s\u00a0words\u00a0better.<\/strong> He created us all equal, with spirit, soul, and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). God is spirit, we are spirit, so we communicate in spirit. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, \u201cDo not rely on your own understanding, but trust in the LORD with all your heart.\u201d The terms used in this verse mean:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Binah (\u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cunderstanding\/discernment\u201d \u2013 the human ability to understand<\/li>\n
  • Lev (\u05dc\u05b5\u05d1)<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cheart\u201d \u2013 trusting God with your whole being<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The\u00a0highly\u00a0praised\u00a0rational\u00a0thinking\u00a0only\u00a0becomes\u00a0fully\u00a0available\u00a0to\u00a0us\u00a0at\u00a0around\u00a0the\u00a0age\u00a0of\u00a012.\u00a0That\u00a0is\u00a0why\u00a0Jesus\u00a0said\u00a0that\u00a0we\u00a0must\u00a0become\u00a0like\u00a0children\u00a0(Matthew 18:3) so\u00a0that\u00a0we\u00a0can\u00a0see\u00a0with\u00a0our\u00a0hearts.<\/p>\n

    Hebrew thinking is not only about facts and logic, but also about relationships, intuition, and experiencing God. But why is this so difficult for us? Because our minds give us a false sense of security. Our\u00a0perceptions\u00a0are also always shaped by our experiences. In our case, no matter how hard we tried to internalize God’s unconditional love, we reacted as usual in stressful situations: first with shame, then with anger or justification, no matter how much we \u201cinternalized\u201d God’s unconditional love. Our hearts need healing through Jesus, who heals broken hearts (Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:28), so that we can trust with all our hearts.<\/p>\n

    The best attitude for perceiving God accurately is therefore positive expectation with our hearts. <\/strong>He\u00a0is\u00a0perfect\u00a0love\u00a0and\u00a0drives\u00a0out all\u00a0fear\u00a0(1 John 4:18). The Letter\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Hebrews\u00a0(11:6)\u00a0exhorts\u00a0us: \u201c…For\u00a0whoever\u00a0would\u00a0approach\u00a0God\u00a0must\u00a0believe\u00a0that\u00a0he\u00a0exists\u00a0and\u00a0that\u00a0he\u00a0rewards\u00a0those\u00a0who\u00a0seek\u00a0him.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Steps\u00a0briefly\u00a0described:<\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    How\u00a0we\u00a0can\u00a0better\u00a0perceive\u00a0God’s\u00a0words\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0derived\u00a0from\u00a0Habakkuk\u00a02:1-2,\u00a0as\u00a0described\u00a0many\u00a0years\u00a0ago\u00a0by\u00a0Pastor Mark\u00a0Virkler:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Be still.<\/strong> Put aside your own ideas and trust wholeheartedly that Jesus Christ wants to speak to you.<\/li>\n
    • Focus on him<\/strong>, feel his presence, and ask an open question, such as, \u201cJesus, what do you want to tell me?\u201d\u00a0Take the FIRST thought\/knowledge\/inner image\/memory and sense what he wants to tell you with it. So don’t think about it.<\/li>\n
    • Let him show you more.<\/strong> If it is unclear to you, ask, \u201cJesus, what do you want to tell me with this?\u201d or \u201cJesus, what do you mean?\u201d Keep asking questions and talking to him (and listening to his answers) until everything he wants to tell you is clear.<\/li>\n
    • Write it down<\/strong> so you don’t forget anything.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Try\u00a0it\u00a0again\u00a0right\u00a0now.<\/strong> Go back to your favorite place and ask Jesus to visit you. Remember: He and His words will be felt more through spontaneous impulses on His part than through an overwhelming apparition, as recorded in the Bible in encounters with angels.<\/p>\n
